Golmaal Returns Movie Review

Posted by bollywooddhamaka on November 5, 2008

You already saw the first installment of this ‘Fun Unlimited’ series and made it a huge hit. Now it’s time to check how the sequel fares. Notice that sequels often tend to generate more hype but are usually low on content! So although many are walking into theatres for this, I wonder how many are actually satisfied as they walk out? Does Golmaal Returns work? Is this chemistry between Ajay and Kareena good? Most importantly, does it outshine the original? Read on to find out!

Rohit Shetty proved his knack for comedy with his previous work. With this film, it seems something has gone terribly wrong. Within the first few minutes of the film, you try to convince yourself that the movie might actually be good and the boring jokes are actually funny. But how long can you lie to yourself?

Golmaal Returns is about a husband named Gopal (Ajay Devgan) who has a very suspicious and soap-opera-loving wife Ekta (Kareena Kapoor). One day, when Gopal saves the sexy Meera (Celina Jaitly) from thugs, he lands into a yacht. There, he is forced to spend an entire night in the woman’s company. Upon returning home his wife is convinced he’s cheated on her and therefore Gopal makes up a lie that he was with a friend named ‘Anthony Gonsalves’. Yeah…you heard me right.

Ekta wants to meet this Anthony so Gopal asks his work colleague Laxman (Shreyas Talpade) to pretend to be this make-believe man. Meanwhile, a corpse is found at the site Gopal was last at after his disastrous night. The police officer, Madhav (Arshad Warsi), who despises Gopal and is also his sister Esha’s (Amrita Arora) boyfriend, finds out Gopal wasn’t home that night. He begins to get suspicious and believes Gopal was involved with the murder.

In the midst of all this, the real Anthony Gonsalves shows up. Ta-da!

For lack of a better word, the script is downright lame. It is tasteless and stupid! What more can I say? Who told scriptwriter Yunus Sajawal that this can actually be a movie? Apparently Rohit Shetty, the director. Honesty, what was he thinking when he okayed such a script? Forget about the script for a while and just look at the entire film. It has nothing going for it! Songs pop up in the most random places, actresses are wearing skimpy clothes in the most unnecessary scenes, and the acting leaves much to be desired.

Golmaal Returns
is disappointing, and how!

As mentioned, the acting isn’t too great either. Ajay is so-so and when he attempts comedy it’s like watching a little child trying to be funny but failing miserably. Kareena is good in her role but that’s because hers is the only role written well. It acts itself. Amrita Arora, after a good show in Hello, springs right back down with Golmaal Returns. She’s good in certain areas and those involve her in out-focus! Celena Jaitly seems much too mature for her role and her revealing outfits do nothing for her mediocre acting skills. Shreyas Talpade isn’t a comic actor, yet he is quite good with his role. I think he outshines the entire cast. Then we come to Arshad Warsi who acts bad, period. It’s as if the only director he works well with is, you guessed it, Rajkumar Hirani. Tusshar Kapoor is super annoying in his mute act. You’d think the lad was choking! Anjana Sukhani does worse than even Celina and gets less scope.

One positive point is that the cinematography of this film is good. You enjoy the way the world of Golmaal Returns is picturized, not directed. Art direction sort of meshes with cinematography and so therefore is acceptable. The music of this film is annoying to say the least. It sounds like noise, not music.

Overall, Golmaal Returns is one film you’d be better off not seeing in the theatres. For this so-called ‘Fun Unlimited’ joyride, it’s all thumbs down. The film moves slowly and it’s hardly funny. You’ll be better if you miss this one!

Salman Khan Grooming Students of WWI on the Sets of Subhash Ghai’s ‘Yuvvraaj’

Posted by bollywooddhamaka on October 31, 2008

Everyone saw a different side of Salman Khan on the sets of Subhash Ghai’s musical extravaganza ‘Yuvvraaj’. He turned out to be quite a stellar attraction to some of the students of Whistling Woods International, not in the class but in the gym.

While shooting for a particular portion of ‘Yuvvraaj’ in the Goregaon Filmcity region it was quite a site to see Salman hanging out in the WWI gym bonding with students and even giving them lessons in grooming and physical fitness.

The actor who is playing the lead singer in forthcoming ‘Yuvvraaj’ emphasized the importance of physical fitness, look, and style. While asked about his experience with interacting the new generation, Salman says with a grin “it was really fun to see these future actors, technicians in such a high spirit. It used to be an informal sessions with them while working out, I will always prefer to pass the knowledge spontaneously rather than sitting in a classroom. My advice will always be that an actor must spend a lot of time and care for his body and face because this is the only instrument with any actor to play the role and to exhibit his talent of acting on a big screen.”

‘Fashion’, ‘Golmaal Returns’ set box office on fire post Diwali

Posted by bollywooddhamaka on October 31, 2008

Much-hyped and awaited movies “Fashion” and “Golmaal Returns” that released Wednesday, a day after Diwali, have set the cash registers ringing – with the latter even breaking some records.

While last year’s Diwali release “Om Shanti Om” and “Saawariya” had a neck-to-neck tussle with the latter proving to be a debacle, both movies released this year are faring well.

“Both films are faring exceptionally well at the box office. Content wise ‘Fashion’ is for upper crust audiences and is attracting youngsters, ‘Golmaal Returns’ is for the masses,” Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan told IANS.

“However, as per the current statistics, the reaction for ‘Fashion’ is going at around 70 percent, while ‘Golmaal Returns’ has fallen to 50 percent. Stay wise, the former is a long-term movie and the initial reaction for it has been 100 percent,” he added.

Girish Johar, associate VP, UTV motion pictures that produced “Fashion”, echoed this, adding: ‘Fashion’ has done fabulously well and it has been the biggest opening for a Madhur Bhandarkar film ever. We are very happy and the audiences are loving the film. It is doing bigger and better than its other counterparts. We are sure it will get audiences for at least the next five weeks.”

Starring Priyanak Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, debutante Mugdha Godse, Arbaaz Khan, Arjan Bajwa and many of the Who’s Who of the style fraternity, ‘Fashion’ is a take on the Indian fashion industry.

“Golmaal Returns” is a sequel to the 2006 hit comedy ‘Golmaal’. The film is about a couple whose married life takes comical twists and turns when the husband gets stuck for a night on a yacht with a beautiful woman.

Directed by Rohit Shetty, it stars host of actors including Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Celina Jaitley, Amrita Arora, Anjana Sukhani and Paresh Rawal.

In terms of budget, producers Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Limited invested around Rs.330 million in “Golmaal Returns”, UTV Motion pictures’ “Fashion” was made on a budget of Rs.190 million and is said to be Bhandarkar’s costliest film till date.

“Fashion” had already recovered half of its costs – around Rs.8.5 million – from in-film advertising through its sponsors and endorsements from brands like Lenovo, Sunsilk, Reebok and Kimaya even before it released.

Distributed by TV 18 network, “Golmaal Returns” released with 1,000 prints worldwide for 1,400 shows while “Fashion” hit the screens with around 700 prints worldwide and collected 40,000 pounds on its opening day in Britain.

“We are expecting to earn Rs.400 million in the first week. The movie collected 40,000 pounds in Britain on the first day itself. It also broke records in Chitra Cinema in Mumbai where it is booked for the nine days. Exhibitors in north India have earned more than Rs. 1 million on first day. It is faring exceptionally well at single screens across the country,” said a spokesperson for Ashtavinayak.
